After assembly the rack was stripped of remaining paint and painted black as original. I was careful to make sure rack ends were not oversprayed or had any dirt on them.  Reassembly is relatively easy although.  Here is the nice rebuilt rack before going back into the car and after the bum o-ring was replaced.
