The Auto Collections at The LINQ Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas – Free!

Lim For anyone interested in classic and sports cars one of the best attractions in Las Vegas lies hidden in the back of the LINQ Hotel and Casino (formerly the Imperial Palace).  The LINQ is located across the street from the iconic Bellagio and its fountains.  Walking through the casino towards the back and the parking structure you will see a small sign and an elevator leading your to The Auto Collections.  The collection was established by former owner of the Imperial Ralph Englestead, who was also a developer of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Current owner Don Williams can often be found at a desk in the Collections.  Here you will find some 200 plus cars on display.  However, the collection is not static – in addition to rotating cars on and off display, most of the cars are for sale and the prices are posted along with the information on the make, year and history of the vehicle. The prices  on my last visit ran between about $14,000 to over a million.  The …

Monterey 2011 – Jaguar E-types at Laguna Seca

One of the really exciting parts of Monetery in 2011 was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the E-type. I was so sorry ours was not quite done – but happy to see so many other owners basking in the glory! One high point for the E-type crowd was an all E-type race and then the chance for other E-types to take a few parade laps around the historic course. It was great. There were dozens of beautiful E-types all parked in a special paddock at the end of the track and in mid-day they rolled out to take a few laps together. I was envious of my friends Mark and Larry as they rolled off and around the track in the green and red coupes. Seeing so many great cars made my wife and I determined to get our E-type on the road and completed. Here are a few shots of the E-types from Laguna Seca – enjoy! Now there was lots of good stuff to see at Laguna Seca and some of …

Monterey 2011 – Great Show in Carmel – Concorso Italiano a Bust – for Us Anyway

As usual we headed up to Monterey, California for the classic car week in August . If you are at all interested in antique or classic cars this is an event you have to take in at least once. Our friend Mark had his E-type selected as one of the press cars for Jaguar’s 50th anniversary of the E-type celebration. Man, I was sorry that I had not had my E-type finished because they were trying to represent a range of models and I might have got it selected. Mark got all sorts of goodies including tickets to the opening party for Pebble Beach – and two tickets for the Quail Motor Sports Gathering. Those are hard to get and worth a lot of money. Alas – it gets even worse – there also was a special parade lap set-up at Laguna Seca for E-types on the Saturday. Again – how fun that would have been! Alas – not having the Jaguar finished we decided to take my wife’s Alfa up to Monterey – which …

XKs Unlimited Open House

Every few years XKs Unlimited in San Luis Obispo, California has an open house and car show in April. This year (2011) the event is Saturday and Sunday, April 9th and 10th.  The company is open on the Saturday and on the Sunday there will be a car show and a JCNA judged concours. Not only is XKs Unlimited a big parts supplier for Jags of all types – but they also have complete repair and restoration facilities. Aside from seeing great Jags and meetings lots of good people, the XKs open house presents an opportunity to see some great cars under restoration and speak to some extremely knowledgeable specialists. It is a real treat for any Jaguar fan. One of the huge benefits of attending the open house  is the chance to purchase parts at a huge discount – and save on shipping by picking them up. Of course, San Luis Obispo and the central Coast region of California are a great place to visit any time. I have ordered a ton of parts …

A Distraction – 2010 Concorso Italiano and Pebble Beach Concours

We go up to Monterey and Carmel every August for the annual classic car week. What can I say – it is a gearhead’s dream. Amongst other things there is  Concorso Italiano, many different car auctions, the historic motor races at Laguna Seca and of course the Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach.  So, we save  our nickles and dimes  and go each year.  We have the added bonus of being able to drive up the California coast with friends to get there. 2010 was a particularly notable year at Concorso Italiano and Pebble Beach for us. My wife has an Alfa and as it was the 100th anniversary of Alfa Romeo there were lots of special Alfa displays etc. Also, Pebble Beach was celebrating the 75th anniversary of Jaguar. So, how could we miss it all! This year I also had the luxury of being driven up as a passenger (mechanic/navigator) in my wife’s Alfa  for the trip and also for the Pacific Grove Rally in which she drove. There was well over 100 Alfas …
